Breast implant removal at the TRAUMKLINIK

There are a wide variety of reasons for the desire for implant removal in the case of previously performed breast augmentation with implants. For example, capsular fibrosis or a foreign body sensation can lead to this desire. There are also isolated patients who complain of symptoms such as hair loss, joint pain, muscle pain, fatigue, concentration disorders, sleep disorders or gastrointestinal problems after breast augmentation. The symptoms can occur individually or together and are often associated with the term Breast Implant Illness (BII).

Procedure of implant removal

The removal of breast implants is usually carried out on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia (general anesthesia is of course also possible). The capsule that envelops the implant is not removed in the majority of cases. If there are pronounced symptoms, as described above, then the capsule should also be removed. The operation is then performed under general anesthesia – with or without a subsequent overnight stay with us. The incision is made in the inframammary fold, regardless of whether the capsule is removed or not. Implant removal with capsule is much more complicated, time-consuming and costly, and the incision is usually a little longer than without capsule removal. If the excess skin is only slight, the removal of the implants is probably sufficient to achieve an aesthetically satisfactory result. The breast will then look about the same as it did before the breast augmentation. If very large implants have to be removed, then a pronounced excess of skin with a sagging breast may remain. In this case, a breast lift can be performed together with the removal of the breast implants. The skin mantle is reduced in size and the nipples are raised to a higher position. The wounds are closed with sutures that dissolve themselves. With discharge, you will receive a special compression belt and a letter with the necessary behaviors for the period after implant removal.

Behavior after the operation

In most cases, mild painkillers are sufficient after the removal of the breast implants. We are of course available to you by phone after the operation. In order not to jeopardize the success of the operation, rules of conduct must be observed. In the early days, this includes in particular the peace and quiet, which you should allow yourself. The total healing time after the removal of the breast implants is about two weeks, and you can resume your professional activity after a few days. There is no need to pull stitches. The ends of the sutures are cut off painlessly after 2-3 weeks.
