After a breast augmentation, various reasons may make it necessary to replace a breast implant. Breast implant replacement is necessary if there is painful capsular fibrosis, a tear in the shell of the breast implants or pronounced inflammation after breast augmentation. A long residence time of the breast implants in the breast is not a compelling reason to remove the implants in the case of a branded implant. If the quality of the breast implants is questionable and unclear, removal or breast implant replacement should at least be considered. Other reasons can be the desire for a different size or the slipping or twisting of the breast implants.

Procedure of the operation

The breast implant replacement is performed under general anesthesia. For this purpose, it is necessary that you are healthy and have had a conversation with an anesthesiologist from our team in advance. In the consultation, the anesthesia procedure is explained and determined in detail. In most cases, the breast implants are replaced by the same skin incision through which they were inserted during breast augmentation. The position of the breast implants (above or below the muscle) usually does not change either. The further procedure during the operation depends on the reason for the breast implant change. For example, capsular fibrosis requires a different surgical method than the desire for a larger breast implant. In the case of extensive sagging, breast implant replacement can be combined with a breast lift. In this case, the skin mantle is reduced in size and the nipples are raised to a higher position. The wounds are closed with self-dissolving sutures. Sometimes it may be necessary to insert a wound drainage during the operation, which is then removed the next morning. You will receive a special compression bra and a discharge letter with the required behaviors upon discharge.

What to do after breast implant replacement

Usually, mild painkillers are sufficient after breast implant replacement. These are only needed for a few days until the swelling has subsided significantly. For your safety, we are of course available by phone after the operation. In order not to jeopardize success, rules of conduct must be observed. In the early days, this includes in particular the peace and quiet, which you should allow yourself. The total healing time is a few weeks, and you will be fully socially acceptable again after about 1-2 weeks. There is no need to pull stitches. Only the ends of the sutures are cut off painlessly after 2-3 weeks.
